What Happened to NewMIC?

NewMIC Home
is the last archived version of the New Media Innovation Centre in the Internet Archive, dated July 15, 2003. In a previous post on RFID: Radio Frequency Indentification I mentioned NewMICs vanishing. The archived site gives no hints as to why this high-profile iniative was closed down – do you know why? Leave me a comment if you do.

Here is a quote from their “What is NewMIC” page:

The New Media Innovation Centre (NewMIC) is a groundbreaking collaboration between industry, academia and government that focuses on the research, development and commercialization of new media technologies and applications. At NewMIC, we bring together technology developers, researchers, artists, academics, entrepreneurs, and multinational companies, to share expertise, experience and resources. The result? We are building a new perspective that will inspire the next generation of new media.
How does NewMIC work?
NewMIC partners and affiliates from industry and academia work together in pre-competitive new media research. Research at NewMIC is conducted as part of a stategic plan, which aims to impact commercialization within an 18 to 36 month horizon, depending on the project.
NewMIC’s research program is organized into distinct Research Focus Areas. Each focus area is made up of researchers from multi-national enterprises, small and medium-sized enterprises, and academic institutions, who have synergistic business and research challenges. NewMIC has developed this collaborative model to enable companies having similar research and/or product goals to co-operate and share ideas, and to develop new technologies, products and applications. Our collaborative model enables academic researchers to work directly with industry to develop commercial products faster and more efficiently.
