MacLeans has a story from June 11, 2001, titled “Gaming Knights; Canadian creator hope to score off Sony, Nintendo and Micrsoft” by Danylo Hawakeshka. It is on a game company, Silicon Knights, which is based in Saint Catherines, just down the road. Silicon Knights presents itself as organized around a “guild” philosophy which seems drawn from the gaming culture. This is from Kelly.
From the www.siliconknights.com web page:
At Silicon KnightsÆ we are committed to the idea of the guild, which dates back at least to the time of the Knights of the Round Table. Guilds are associations of people of the same trade or pursuits, formed to protect mutual interests and maintain standards. In our case, we function like a guild of craftspeople, all dedicated to creating state-of-the-art computer games. Because of this, we do not seek to slot our people into overly-rigid job categories. Even though our people are hired, and do most of their work, as programmers, artists, or designers, everyone is encouraged to contribute to all aspects of the games we create. We even take continuing education seriously, funding trips to important conferences and running an active in-studio lecture series, which draws upon professors from our local university (Brock University). We always welcome applications from talented individuals for the positions of programmer, artist, or designer. At Silicon KnightsÆ we value formal education very highly. At the same time the factor which will ultimately decide whether we hire someone is talent. Past experience using related skills is also a huge asset, but don’t let a lack of game-development experience keep you from applying if you feel you are can contribute to our guild. Demos and samples of your work are welcomed and encouraged (but please do not send originals, as we cannot guarantee their safe return).
