In particular there is a good one, Advancing Ontario&#8217;s Future Through Advanced Degrees (2003) on the need to double graduate enrollments. I suspect the recommendations and data in this report influenced the Rae Report on the need for more places for graduate students.<br \/>\nThe report has a nice short history of Ontario graduate education &#8211; the first MAs were given in 1845 by King&#8217;s College and the first PhD in 1900. There is a wealth of data and interpretation in the report.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nThe four recommendations of the report are:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>RECOMMENDATION 1<br \/>\nThe Task Force recommends that the Government of Ontario establish a 10-year goal of doubling the level of graduate enrollment in Ontario&#8217;s universities.<br \/>\nRECOMMENDATION 2<br \/>\nThe Task Force recommends that the Government of Ontario move immediately to full funding for graduate enrolments.<br \/>\nRECOMMENDATION 3<br \/>\nThe Task Force recommends that the Working Group on University Capacity be tasked with developing a detailed plan for increasing graduate enrolment in the next five years, including the funding mechanism and the implications for graduate enrolments for institutions and disciplines.<br \/>\nRECOMMENDATION 4<br \/>\nThe Task Force recommends that the Government of Ontario and the Government of Canada, with other provincial governments and university representatives as appropriate, develop a joint framework to support the increase in graduate enrolment to meet Ontario and national requirements.
