The purpose of this site is to spread awareness and to shame companies that use them.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Reading about <a href=\"https:\/\/uxdesign.cc\/human-values-matter-why-value-sensitive-design-should-be-part-of-every-ux-designers-toolkit-e53ffe7ec436\">Value Sensitive Design<\/a> I came across a link to Harry Brignul\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.darkpatterns.org\/\">Dark Patterns<\/a>. The site is about ways that web designers try to manipulate users. They have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.darkpatterns.org\/hall-of-shame\">Hall of Shame<\/a> that is instructive and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.darkpatterns.org\/reading-list\">Reading List<\/a> if you want to follow up. It is interesting to see attempts to regulate certain patterns of deception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Values are expressed and embedded in technology; they have real and often non-obvious impacts on users and society.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The alternative is introduce values and ethics into the design process. This is where Value Sensitive Design comes. As developed by <a href=\"https:\/\/mitpress.mit.edu\/books\/value-sensitive-design\">Batya Friedman and colleagues<\/a> it is an approach that includes methods for thinking-through the ethics of a project from the beginning. Some of the approaches mentioned in the article include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Mapping out what a design will support, hinder or prevent.<\/li><li>Consider the stakeholders, especially those that may not have any say in the deployment or use of a technology.<\/li><li>Try to understand the underlying assumptions of technologies.<\/li><li>Broaden our gaze as to the effects of a technology on human experience.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>They have even produced a set of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ubookstore.com\/5-p-s-Envisioning-Cards-2019-Cards-Timer-Booklets\">Envisioning Cards<\/a> for sale.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dark Patterns are tricks used in websites and apps that make you buy or sign up for things that you didn&#8217;t mean to.
