{"id":6791,"date":"2018-04-01T20:41:10","date_gmt":"2018-04-01T20:41:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theoreti.ca\/?p=6791"},"modified":"2018-04-01T20:41:10","modified_gmt":"2018-04-01T20:41:10","slug":"after-the-facebook-scandal-its-time-to-base-the-digital-economy-on-public-v-private-ownership-of-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theoreti.ca\/?p=6791","title":{"rendered":"After the Facebook scandal it\u2019s time to base the digital economy on public v private ownership of data"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>In a nutshell, instead of letting Facebook get away with charging us for its services or continuing to exploit our data for advertising, we must find a way to get companies like Facebook to pay for accessing our data \u2013 conceptualised, for the most part, as something we own in common, not as something we own as individuals.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Evgeny Morozov has a great essay in The Guardian on how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2018\/mar\/31\/big-data-lie-exposed-simply-blaming-facebook-wont-fix-reclaim-private-information\">After the Facebook scandal it\u2019s time to base the digital economy on public v private ownership of data<\/a>.\u00a0He argues that better data protection is not enough. We need to &#8220;to articulate a truly decentralised, emancipatory politics, whereby the institutions of the state (from the national to the municipal level) will be deployed to recognise, create, and foster the creation of social rights to data.&#8221; In Alberta that may start with a centralized clinical information system called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.albertahealthservices.ca\/info\/cis.aspx\">Connect Care<\/a> managed by the Province. The Province will presumably control access to our data to those researchers and health-care practitioners that commit to using access appropriately.
