{"id":6506,"date":"2017-05-02T03:07:18","date_gmt":"2017-05-02T03:07:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theoreti.ca\/?p=6506"},"modified":"2017-05-02T03:07:18","modified_gmt":"2017-05-02T03:07:18","slug":"research-data-management-week-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theoreti.ca\/?p=6506","title":{"rendered":"Research Data Management Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every year the University of Alberta Libraries organizes a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.library.ualberta.ca\/research-support\/data-management\/rdm-events\">Research Data Management Week<\/a> to bring faculty, staff, students, and community data specialists together around data management. I was part of an panel session today on the subject. One of the issues we discussed with was how to deal with a likely requirement from funding agencies like SSHRC that Research Data Management Plans be submitted with grants. Some thoughts on this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Such a requirement will build on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.science.gc.ca\/eic\/site\/063.nsf\/eng\/h_83F7624E.html?OpenDocument\">Principles on Digital Data Management<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Researchers will initially need help understanding what a DMP (Data Management Plan) is. The <a href=\"https:\/\/portagenetwork.ca\/\">Portage Network<\/a> DMP Assistant can help, but many will need an introduction to the issues.<\/li>\n<li>Research universities and libraries will need to develop strategies for supporting projects\u00a0to meet their new obligations. We will need the infrastructure to match.<\/li>\n<li>There will be push back from some scholarly associations. Others, like <a href=\"http:\/\/csdh-schn.org\/\">CSDH-SCHN<\/a> will welcome this as we have policies that support the idea.<\/li>\n<li>There is a cost to properly curating, documenting and depositing research data. This cost comes typically at the end of projects when the funds are spent. We will need to do a better job budgeting for data management\/deposit.<\/li>\n<li>We need to develop small grants and services for projects to help them go the last mile in curating and depositing their content. At the <a href=\"http:\/\/kias.ualberta.ca\">Kule Institute<\/a> we developed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ualberta.ca\/kule-institute\/funding\">CRAfT grants<\/a> in partnership with the UofA Libraries. These grants are meant for prototyping digital archives.
