{"id":6277,"date":"2016-08-04T10:43:16","date_gmt":"2016-08-04T10:43:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theoreti.ca\/?p=6277"},"modified":"2016-08-04T10:43:16","modified_gmt":"2016-08-04T10:43:16","slug":"stylometry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theoreti.ca\/?p=6277","title":{"rendered":"Stylometry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.culingtec.uni-leipzig.de\/ESU_C_T\/node\/97\">European Summer University in Digital Humanities 2016<\/a> I was luck to be able to attend some sessions on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.culingtec.uni-leipzig.de\/ESU_C_T\/node\/637\">Stylometry<\/a> run by Maciej Eder. In his historical review he mentioned people like Valla and Mendenhall, but also mentioned a fellow Pole, Wincenty Lutoslawksi whose book\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/stream\/origingrowthofpl00lutoiala#page\/64\/mode\/2up\">The origin and growth of Plato&#8217;s logic; with an account of Plato&#8217;s style and of the chronology of his writings (1897)<\/a> is the first to use the term &#8220;stylometry&#8221;. Lutoslawski develops a Theory of Stylometry and reviewed &#8220;500 peculiarities of Plato&#8217;s style&#8221; as part of his work on Plato&#8217;s logic. The nice thing is that the book is available through the Internet Archive.<\/p>\n<p>Eder has a nice page about the work he and ogthers in the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/computationalstylistics\/\">Computational Stylistics Group are doing<\/a>. In the workshop sessions I was able to attend he showed us how to\u00a0set up and run his <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/computationalstylistics\/stylo\/stylo_howto.pdf?attredirects=0&amp;d=1\">&#8220;stylo&#8221; package (PDF)<\/a>\u00a0that provides a simple user interface over R for doing stylometry.
