This year&#8217;s topic is privacy and surveillance in the digital age. The <a href=\"http:\/\/kias.ualberta.ca\">Kule Institute for Advanced Study<\/a> is hosting this online conference. Here are some of my opening comments,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">I would like to welcome you to our\u00a0second Around the World Conference. This year\u2019s conference is on Privacy and\u00a0Surveillance in the Digital Age.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The ATW conference was the idea of\u00a0the Founding Director of KIAS, Jerry Varsava. The idea is to support a truly\u00a0international discussion around a topic that concerns us all around the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">This year we have speakers from 11\u00a0countries including Nigeria, Netherlands, Japan, Australia, Italy, Israel,\u00a0Ireland, Germany, Brazil, the US, and of course Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">This ATW conference is an\u00a0experiment. It is an experiment because it is difficult to coordinate the\u00a0technology across so many countries\u00a0and institutions. It is an experiment in finding ways to move ideas without moving bodies.
