{"id":4922,"date":"2013-08-19T21:18:17","date_gmt":"2013-08-19T21:18:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theoreti.ca\/?p=4922"},"modified":"2013-08-19T21:18:17","modified_gmt":"2013-08-19T21:18:17","slug":"lessons-learned-from-vanderbilts-first-moocs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theoreti.ca\/?p=4922","title":{"rendered":"Lessons Learned from Vanderbilt\u2019s First MOOCs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Derek Bruff of the Center for Teaching at Vanderbilt has posted a nice essay on the <a href=\"http:\/\/cft.vanderbilt.edu\/2013\/08\/lessons-learned-from-vanderbilts-first-moocs\/\">Lessons Learned from Vanderbilt\u2019s First MOOCs<\/a>. They have run three MOOCs starting with one on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coursera.org\/course\/posa\">Pattern-Oriented Software Architecture for Concurrent and Networked Software<\/a>. With this one they found only 7% were awarded some sort of statement of accomplishment (which is a measure of how many finished the course in some fashion.) They had better luck with the next two MOOCs on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coursera.org\/course\/innovation\">leadership<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coursera.org\/course\/lifenutr\">nutrition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The essay then discusses a number of lessons learned (which I quote):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Teaching online is a team effort<\/li>\n<li>There&#8217;s more to MOOCs than lecture videos<\/li>\n<li>Open content is our friend<\/li>\n<li>The cognitive diversity seen in MOOCs is far greater than in closed courses<\/li>\n<li>MOOC students are well-motivated students<\/li>\n<li>Cognitive Diversity + Intrinsic Motivations = Crowdsourcing Success<\/li>\n<li>Accommodating students on different time tables can be challenging<\/li>\n<li>Instructor presence is important<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They have a MOOC coming up on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coursera.org\/course\/onlinegames\">Online Games: Literature, New Media, and Narrative<\/a> which I think I&#8217;m going to take.
