{"id":3645,"date":"2011-05-14T12:23:24","date_gmt":"2011-05-14T17:23:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theoreti.ca\/?p=3645"},"modified":"2011-05-14T15:38:02","modified_gmt":"2011-05-14T20:38:02","slug":"people-remember-10-of-what-they-read-a-knol-by-rutger-van-de-sande","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theoreti.ca\/?p=3645","title":{"rendered":"People remember 10% of what they read&#8230;? &#8211; a knol by Rutger van de Sande"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I heard a keynote at the GRAND 2011 conference who mentioned a &#8220;learning pyramid&#8221; which purports to show that lecturing is the worst way to teach.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/dkuropatwa\/2097911609\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2068\/2097911609_1da0d5abbb.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I went looking for the research behind this and it seems that the pyramid is a hoax. <a href=\"http:\/\/knol.google.com\/k\/people-remember-10-of-what-they-read#\">People remember 10% of what they read&#8230;? &#8211; a knol by Rutger van de Sande<\/a> is a short study that tried to figure out what were really the percentages. Van de Sande&#8217;s study came up with different numbers: Hearing: 36%, Reading: 51%, Seeing: 35%, Hearing and Seeing: 54%, Discussing: 50%, Experiencing: 70%, and Explaining: 58%.<\/p>\n<p>Other blogs and essays on the subject include:<a href=\"http:\/\/www.willatworklearning.com\/2006\/11\/ntl_continues_i.html\"> Will Thalheimer<\/a>&#8216;s blog debunking the pyramid. There is an article in <em>Education<\/em> titled, <a href=\"http:\/\/eric.ed.gov\/ERICWebPortal\/search\/detailmini.jsp?_nfpb=true&amp;_&amp;ERICExtSearch_SearchValue_0=EJ790160&amp;ERICExtSearch_SearchType_0=no&amp;accno=EJ790160\">The Learning Pyramid: Does It Point Teachers in the Right Direction?<\/a> (that I haven&#8217;t read) that looks at the source for the numbers. Finally there is a long <a href=\"http:\/\/davidtjones.wordpress.com\/2009\/10\/11\/the-learning-pyramid-true-false-hoax-or-myth\/\">blog post on the subject by David Jones<\/a>.
