Guy P. pointed me to a really good summary of positions on the issue of what&#8217;s happening to newspapers, see Clay Shirky&#8217;s colleague Jay Rosen on <a href=\"http:\/\/journalism.nyu.edu\/pubzone\/weblogs\/pressthink\/2009\/03\/26\/flying_seminar.html\">PressThink: Rosen&#8217;s Flying Seminar In The Future of News<\/a>. I should also gather in my blog entry on the New Yorker article, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theoreti.ca\/?p=2050\">The News Business: Out of Print<\/a> which is a good introduction to the issue.<\/p>\n<p>Personally I think this will strengthen public broadcasting and their news capacity. No one in the USA thinks publicly funded broadcasting as an alternative because they don&#8217;t have it, but here in Canada the CBC does a great job, at least on the radio, and in the UK (where they are well funded) they do an even better job with an international service. For example, watching <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0995832\/\">Generation Kill<\/a> you will notice the Marines are listening to the BBC for their news! (Yes, I know it is fiction, but it is based fairly closely on the experiences of an embedded Rolling Stone reporter.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I blogged before about Clay Shirky&#8217;s Newspapers and Thinking the Unthinkable.
