As a result a lot of the popular history of computing out there is &#8220;heroic&#8221; and focuses on people or companies and insider knowledge.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nOne interesting quote from Wallace&#8217;s &#8220;Thinking About Machinery&#8221; (Wallace 1978, pp.237ff.) draws attention to the importance of tinkering to inventors like Edison and the problem of looking only at verbal materials.<\/p>\n<p>He makes a very interesting point about the tripartite nature of computing. That it is a engineered machine (so there is a history of the engineering), it is a logical machine (so there is a history of the logic and mathematics) and it is programmed to do things (so there is a history of the craft of programming and media development.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>M.S.
