{"id":1349,"date":"2006-10-23T15:24:31","date_gmt":"2006-10-23T19:24:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theoreti.ca\/?p=1349"},"modified":"2006-10-23T15:34:42","modified_gmt":"2006-10-23T19:34:42","slug":"national-consultation-on-access-to-scientific-research-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theoreti.ca\/?p=1349","title":{"rendered":"National Consultation on Access to Scientific Research Data"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/ncasrd-cnadrs.scitech.gc.ca\/home_e.shtml\">National Consultation on Access to Scientific Research Data<\/a> produced a final report (<a href=\"http:\/\/ncasrd-cnadrs.scitech.gc.ca\/NCASRDReport_e.pdf\">PDF is here<\/a>) calling for a national research data &#8220;archive&#8221; called Data Canada. This report has a <i>deja vu<\/i> feel about it as I was on the National Data Archive Consultation (SSHRC and then National Archive project) that produced a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sshrc.ca\/web\/about\/publications\/da_phase1_e.pdf\">Needs Assessment Report (PDF)<\/a> in 2001 and then a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sshrc.ca\/web\/about\/publications\/da_finalreport_e.pdf\">Final Report (PDF)<\/a> in 2002. Nothing happened as a result of these, so I think SSHRC is now working with the sciences and health to make the case across the disciplines. Why do we need the sciences to make our case?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We recommend the creation of a task force, dubbed <strong>Data Force<\/strong>, to prepare a full national implementation strategy, and mount a pilot project to show the value and impact of multi-person and multidisciplinary access to research data. Once such a national strategy is broadly supported and has obtained appropriate funding commitments, we propose the establishment of a dedicated national infrastructure, tentatively called <strong>Data Canada<\/strong>, to assume overall leadership in the development and execution of a strategic plan. The plan would encompass and presumably extend the NCASRD\u201a\u00c4\u00f4s recommendations.
