I was invited to speak at a special session of <a title=\"Acfas - Congr\u00d4\u00f8?s\" href=\"http:\/\/www.acfas.ca\/congres\/\">Association francophone pour le savoir &#8211; Congr?\u00a9s<\/a> on <a title=\"Congr\u00d4\u00f8?s Acfas - Communications pr\u00d4\u00f8?sent\u00d4\u00f8?es au congr\u00d4\u00f8?s\" href=\"http:\/\/www.acfas.ca\/acfas74\/coll315.htm\">Interactivity and Narrative<\/a>. The papers were excellent &#8211; well theorized and provocative. Some worth noting:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bertrand Gervais gave a paper on  <a title=\"Congr\u00d4\u00f8?s Acfas - Communication pr\u00d4\u00f8?sent\u00d4\u00f8?e au congr\u00d4\u00f8?s\" href=\"http:\/\/www.acfas.ca\/acfas74\/C2148.HTM\">L&#8217;illusion d&#8217;une pr?\u00a9sence : l&#8217;efficacit?\u00a9 symbolique des nouveaux m?\u00a9dias<\/a>. Bertrand is leading a CFI funded lab <a title=\"nt2.ca\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nt2.ca\/\">nt2<\/a> that is developing a database of new technology fiction so that electronic literature, net art and interactive hyperfiction can be studied.<\/li>\n<li>Bernard Perron and Carl Therrien gave a great paper on <a title=\"Congr\u00d4\u00f8?s Acfas - Communication pr\u00d4\u00f8?sent\u00d4\u00f8?e au congr\u00d4\u00f8?s\" href=\"http:\/\/www.acfas.ca\/acfas74\/C1835.HTM\">L&#8217;illusion du cin?\u00a9ma interactif<\/a> that presented a good topology of interactive cinema and games.<\/li>\n<li>Joanne Lalonde presented a paper on <a title=\"Congr\u00d4\u00f8?s Acfas - Communication pr\u00d4\u00f8?sent\u00d4\u00f8?e au congr\u00d4\u00f8?s\" href=\"http:\/\/www.acfas.ca\/acfas74\/C2149.HTM\">Rituels de l&#8217;oeuvre hyperm?\u00a9diatique : individualit?\u00a9 et collectivit?\u00a9<\/a>. She looked at net art through the lense of ritual in a way that was new to me.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If  there was one problem with the papers it was that everyone was connecting interactivity to narrative and few questioned whether narrative was appropriate.
